A. Power button

On the back side of the 4640 is the power button. The power button has two primary uses:

1. Operation flexibility - ability to power off the display when the machine needs to remain running

2. Display reset - if a hard reset is needed to re-boot the display, the operator can do so without keying off the machine by pressing the power button for more than 4 seconds

B. External USB adapter port

C. Ethernet port

Ethernet connectivity is required for Remote Display Access (RDA).

D. Extended monitor port

A port is available on the backside of the 4640 Universal Display for connection to a secondary monitor, providing Gen 4 Extended Monitor compatibility.

E. Antennas

The green antennas are located externally for connectivity purposes. The operator will not need to adjust these antennas after receiving the 4640 Universal Display. Antenna positioning does not affect operating performance.

F. Machine connector

The machine connector port is the harness connection point for the machine and the 4640 Universal Display.

G. Video connector

The 4640 Universal Display has video connection. The operator will have the ability to view the live video on the display. The camera (video observation system) is available through JD Parts and ag and industrial (A and I) products.

Status light-emitting diode (LED) indicator

An LED indicator light has been added for quicker diagnostic understanding and is located on the right side of the display, below the integrated USB ports. The LED is has three colors; red, orange, and green. The following definitions are used to classify when each color should be shown:

  • Red – failure mode
  • Orange – processing/booting
  • Green – all systems operating normally

The 4640 features a modular-designed layout manager, so operators can easily create the page views that meet their needs. From the factory, machines are equipped with one guidance default run page. Run pages can be created and stored within the All Run Pages tab with no limit. A maximum number of 10 run pages can be added to the Active Set. The Active Set provides the ability to toggle through selected pages on the main screen. Toggling between run pages is as easy as swiping the screen or using the arrow buttons on the top right portion of the title bar.

Users and access

Users and access allow the owner or manager to lock out certain functions to prevent operators from accessing or changing settings. Lock-out functions are managed with a defined pin for the administrator.

The 4640 Universal Display can be set to one of two profiles, administrator or operator. The administrator profile is always set to the full access group. This group allows unlimited access to all of the features and has the ability to lock and unlock features in the operator profile.

On-screen help and diagnostic text

There are a number of different ways to get meaningful on-screen help when navigating the 4640 Universal Display. The help icon is located on the default shortcut bar on the bottom of the run page. This icon gives detailed information of all contents of the operating system. Simply select the help icon and navigate to the information section that is needed.

Additionally, application-based help is also available in all locations of the 4640 Universal Display. Simply click on the {i} icon available on the title bar to see more information on the application currently being used.

Diagnostic text and information throughout the operating system is available for better understanding of whether applications are operating as directed.

Work monitor

The work monitor application displays the performance information about the task being performed by the machine. The user is shown averages, totals, and productivity of the machine, such as area worked, average working speed, and fuel usage. The values of the work monitor can be reset by the user at any time. Specific values of the work monitor can be configured by the user to be shown on a run page.

NOTE: The work monitor application replaces values found in the universal performance monitor with the GreenStar™ 3 (GS3) 2630 Display.

Video capability

4640 Universal Displays are equipped with four video inputs. The operator has the ability to set a variety of triggers to activate the camera. The image will then appear on the 4640 Display. The camera (video observation system) is available through JD Parts. When used with a Gen 4 Extended Monitor, two independent camera views can be monitored simultaneously on each display. All harnessing, inputs, outputs, and software support Voyager® camera systems. Other camera systems will require third-party harnessing and converter for use.

Mark areas of the field that need special attention or items that need to be addressed such as rocks, tile lines, or weed pressure. Flags previously recorded on the Gen 4 or GS3 2630 Display can be transferred between displays to ensure each operator is aware of upcoming field obstacles.

Dual display

John Deere 4640 Universal Display may be configured to run with GS3 and Gen 4 CommandCenter™ displays on machines approved in the machine compatibility section.

All precision ag activations purchased on the 4640 Universal Display are defaulted to run on the cornerpost display while in dual-display mode. Activations cannot be shared between the 4640 Display and the Generation 4 CommandCenter. The second display must have its own activations to run AMS applications. RDA can be used on either the 4640 Display or Generation 4 CommandCenter in the same session.

Precision ag applications, such as AutoTrac assisted steering system, documentation, and Section Control cannot run on both displays at the same time. When a cornerpost display is installed, precision ag applications will default to the cornerpost display. For full dual-display compatibility, reference the configuration table.

NOTE: SeedStar™ 4HP software will require the latest mid-year software update for use in dual-display mode with a 4640 Universal Display and Gen 4 CommandCenter Display in the spring of 2018. Please refer to SeedStar 4HP software updates to provide the latest compatibility with this configuration as current software does not support it. The Gen 4 Extended Monitor is the recommended solution for the use of an additional screen with a 4600 CommandCenter Display.

Machine applications will always be located on the Gen 4 CommandCenter. View on-screen help to properly set up display when in dual-display mode.

John Deere 4640 Universal Display subscription model provides John Deere precision ag operators more choice in how they purchase precision ag applications. This gives flexibility in selecting the level of subscription that matches the operators’ needs year by year. John Deere AutoTrac™ and documentation are included in the purchase of the display.

Two subscriptions will be available with the 4640 Universal Display + AutoTrac Activation:

  • 4640 Precision Ag Premium 3.0 1-year subscription
    • Enables John Deere Section Control, Data Sync, AutoTrac RowSense™, and In-Field Data Sharing functionality for 1 year
  • 4640 Automation 1.0 1-year subscription
    • Enables Data Sync, John Deere Section Control, AutoTrac RowSense, In-Field Data Sharing, AutoTrac Turn Automation, and AutoTrac Implement Guidance (passive guidance) functionality for 1 year

Subscription-based precision ag offerings provide the following benefits:

  • Lower cost of entry to get started with display and subscriptions
  • Ability to try new applications for a year without having to commit to a permanent software license
  • Ability to match the cost of use with the revenue generated in the same fiscal year
  • Flexibility in selecting the level of subscription that best fits the needs of the business without the expense of a one-time software license purchase
Add Gen 4 Extended Monitor to a 4640 Universal Display
Gen 4 Extended Monitor (left) and 4640 Universal Display (right)Gen 4 Extended Monitor (left) and 4640 Universal Display (right)

The Gen 4 Extended Monitor provides a secondary monitor solution for those producers who want two monitors to manage their machine and precision ag applications on their 4640 Universal Display. Adding the second monitor allows producers in display-intensive operations the ability to view and adjust more of their operations at once.

Leveraging the 4640 Universal Display with Extended Monitor provides the following benefits:

  • One easy-to-use system. Make adjustments on the go with either monitor in one operating system while having direct access to more run pages and information at all times.
  • The 4640 Universal Display is built on a foundation of making it easy to use for operators. Two monitors from the same system eliminates the potential for mismatched information and the need for separate software updates for different displays.
  • Maximize uptime and minimize setup time with quick and easy plug-and-play over the traditional dual-display set-up steps.
  • Customize the in-field office to increase viewable access to the 4640 Universal Display run pages as well as the flexible mounting location capability of the additional monitor.
  • Avoid costly mistakes during product application through direct access to information and adjustments.

StarFire Receivers

StarFire Receivers can be updated in the following ways:

  • Receiver USB port (available only for StarFire 6000 Receivers)
  • Gen 4 display USB port
  • Remote software updates application (in ISOBUS VT app)

Additionally, StarFire iTC Receivers are no longer supported with software update 2017-1 and newer software. StarFire 6000 Receivers require software version 3.80F or higher when used with AutoTrac Implement Guidance.

John Deere Operations Center

Activations/subscriptions required for Wireless Data Transfer (WDT) and Data Sync:

  • A CommandCenter Premium activation or 4640 Premium Subscription is required to wirelessly transfer files.
  • JDLink™ Ultimate + WDT + Remote Display Access (RDA) or JDLink Connect subscription

To use RDA on a Gen 4 CommandCenter Display with a GS3 2630 Display connected in the same machine, GS3 2630 software version 3.22.1095 (SU2014-1) or higher is required (for 4600 CommandCenter Display and 4640 Universal Display only).

GreenStar Rate Controller and GreenStar Rate Controller Dry

GreenStar Rate Controller Dry is supported with the 4600 CommandCenter Display with software update 2017-2 and newer. The 4600 CommandCenter Display and 4640 Universal Display support documentation and section control of up to five GreenStar Rate Controller units.

To update the GreenStar Rate Controller and GreenStar Rate Controller Dry, utilize a Gen 4 Display USB port. John Deere dealers can also utilize Service ADVISOR.

John Deere Rate Controller 2000

The Gen 4 Displays and John Deere Rate Controller 2000 can support documentation and control up to five operations. ISO controllers such as SeedStar on John Deere planters can be used with a John Deere Rate Controller 2000 that is documenting additional operations. Additionally, Gen 4 Displays can document shared sections with a John Deere Rate Controller 2000. An example of this would be John Deere Rate Controller 2000 used with a Raven Sidekick™ ICD direct injection pump.

For more information on Gen 4 displays and John Deere Rate Controller 2000 compatibility, please visit the John Deere Ag Sales Manual.

AutoTrac Universal 200, AutoTrac Universal 300, and AutoTrac Controller

AutoTrac Universal 200, AutoTrac Universal 300, and AutoTrac Controllers are for use with the 4640 Universal Display and 4240 Universal Display. Please see the AutoTrac Universal 200, AutoTrac Universal 300, or AutoTrac Controller Sales Manual for exact model compatibility.

ISOBUS implements

A software update performed by an authorized ISOBUS implement dealer may be required to obtain compatible software. ISOBUS implements must be certified through the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) to be recognized by the Gen 4 CommandCenter display. Visit for more information; visit for an active list of compatible implements.

ISOBUS implements with VT4 are now supported by Gen 4 Displays. Gen 4 Displays still support older VT versions (example: VT2 and VT3). If an implement is not loading after updating to Gen 4 software update 2017-2 (or newer on 4600 CommandCenter v2 processors), it is recommended that the implement manufacturer be contacted to get a software version that is either VT3 or VT4.

Implements without controllers

Implements without controllers can be documented as a stand-alone operation or with a rate controller from John Deere. Implements without controllers cannot be documented with an implement that has control units. Additionally, multiple implements without controllers cannot be documented together.

AutoTrac Turn Automation

AutoTrac Turn Automation is available on the 4600 CommandCenter Display and is compatible with the 4640 Universal Display installed in Final Tier 4 (FT4) tractors. Additionally, AutoTrac Turn Automation is not compatible with Easy Fold on SeedStar 4HP planters or TruSet Tillage technology.

AutoTrac Implement Guidance (passive)

AutoTrac Implement Guidance is not compatible with the SeedStar 4HP planters with Easy Fold. Software update 18-1 with a Gen 4 Automation 1.0 Activation or 4640 Automation 1.0 Subscription are required to use AutoTrac Implement Guidance (passive).

Extended monitor

When using an extended monitor with equipment visualized in ISOBUS VT Viewer and applying VT run page modules to two run pages shown at the same time, the extended monitor’s VT modules will not update. To mitigate this, only view VT modules on one run page at a time.

Camera compatibility

Voyager® cameras are supported on Gen 4 Displays. All other camera types are not supported.

Non-John Deere Precision Ag

4600 CommandCenter Display v2 and the 4640 Universal Display are now compatible with the following RS-232 configurations with software update 18-2:

  • GPS receivers with serial port connection
    • Will not enable AutoTrac guidance functionality
  • Raven RS-232 control units (440, 450, or 660) on tractors configured as implement-based applications
  • Gen 4 displays are not compatible with the DN345 Drawn Dry Spreader at this time.

Machine Communication Radio (MCR)

Gen 4 displays are not compatible with MCR.

Mobile Data Transfer (MDT)

  • Gen 4 display work data is not compatible with and cannot be viewed in APEX software.
  • USB files including pre-assigned APEX tasks and iTEC™ Pro sequences will not import into Gen 4 displays.

  • CommandCenter Premium activation/4640 Premium subscription as-applied data is only compatible with the John Deere Operations Center. CommandCenter Premium activation is machine specific and cannot be transferred to a different machine. If not using WDT, an 8- to 32-GB USB is required to transfer data to and from the Gen 4 Display. Implement settings are display specific and cannot be imported or exported from the Gen 4 Display.
  • Precision Ag applications, such as Documentation and Section Control with a 4640 Universal Display, require GreenStar ready capability and a StarFire 3000 or StarFire 6000 Receiver. Third-party controllers and receivers are not compatible.

Remote Display Access (RDA)

The ability to remotely view the machine’s settings, performance, yield, acres, and other information is highly valuable when managing or supervising an operation. It is imperative that the operator’s equipment keeps running productively and that the producer or dealer is enabled to provide remote support to improve the quality and efficiency of work while saving time and money. RDA enables an operator to get help with machine settings or identify a problem and receive assistance in navigating through the steps needed to resolve the issue.

Increase efficiency with wireless transfer of data
Wirelessly transfer data

John Deere WDT helps producers save time, money, and increase productivity through telematics-enabled data transfer via JDLink™ Connect wireless telematics. Wirelessly transfer setup, prescription, and documentation files securely between office, mobile devices, and 4640/4240 Universal Display or 4600/4200 CommandCenter™, eliminating the need for USB transfer. This increases producer uptime and productivity, reducing the risk of data loss, and enabling easy data sharing and more timely decision making.

Through the John Deere Operations Center, producers are in control and can easily share files with a John Deere dealer and other advisers.

With WDT, producers can send data wirelessly to the John Deere Operations Center; data is available to view in field analyzer after a field has been completed, new work has started, or a half hour after field work has been stopped. Data Sync enables producers to stream data to John Deere Operations Center in 30 second intervals. Producers have the opportunity to analyze data from completed fields or view where field work is in process, making it easier for producers to make operational decisions. Data is available to analyze from any internet- connected device to make important production decisions and give operations the ability to invoice work recently completed.

Set-up files and prescriptions can be transferred from the Operations Center to the 4600/4200 CommandCenter or 4640/4240 Universal Display anytime, wirelessly, eliminating trips to the machines’ locations and allowing for more timely completion of field operations. Modified setup files and prescriptions will not overwrite files currently on the Gen 4 Display; only modified information will be added within the setup file

Enable tractor-implement communication through AEF ISOBUS TC-SC compatibility

The Generation 4 CommandCenter™ and Gen 4 Universal Displays display are an AEF ISOBUS compatible display.

An easy plug and play between implements, displays, tractors, and other products is required today in daily business. This is why within agriculture and forestry, an industry standard, ISOBUS, is used for communication between these products.

From the ag industry, the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF) was initiated in 2008 to have a common forum among manufacturers to define the ISOBUS standard further, define and conduct ISOBUS tests, accelerate adoption, label compatible products, and to communicate this to dealers and customers. John Deere is one of the seven founding members of AEF and is very engaged in the organization.

To better ensure ISOBUS compatibility, the AEF developed new functionalities, i.e., auxiliaries (AUX) and Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC,) in addition to the well-known universal terminal (UT). They are also the basis for the certification of ISOBUS products. An ISOBUS functionality can be described as an independent ISOBUS product and the concept is extendable for later additions of functionalities.

Gen 4 CommandCenter and Gen 4 Universal Displays support the following ISOBUS features:

  • 4600/4200 CommandCenter and 4640/4240 Universal Display:
    • Universal Terminal (UT)
-> ISOBUS sprayer, seeder, planter, fertilizer spreader, manure applicator, and many other implements can be operated through the UT functionality.
    • Task Controller Section Control (TC-SC)
-> With TC-SC, ISOBUS compliant implements like sprayers, seeders, planters, fertilizer spreaders, and manure tankers can be used with automatic Section Control.
    • Task Controller Basic (TC-Bas)
-> With TC-Bas, documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, totals like area, amount, etc. are recorded directly from the implement.
    • Task Controller geo-based (TC-Geo)
-> With TC-Geo, location-based documentation with ISOBUS compliant implements in the standard data format of ISOXML is possible. Also, Client, Farm, Field, Boundary, Products, Crops (incl. Varieties), Prescriptions, Operators, Tasks, Comments are recorded directly from the implement.
    • Auxiliary Control (AUX-N)
-> With AUX-N, additional control elements that facilitate the operation of complex equipment, such as a joystick; also, the capability of controlling implement functions by means of an additional control element.

Third-party RS232 compatibility with Gen 4 displays

Documentation of implement-based field operations remains important regardless of controller brand. The 4600 CommandCenter™ Display and 4640 Universal Display can communicate with select third-party controllers and third-party global positioning systems (GPS). Collectively, the system supplies the operator with instantaneous data while viewing the display. This information can be viewed in the John Deere Operations Center software for further analysis and reporting.

When using a Raven controller, the Gen 4 display can run in conjunction with map-based prescriptions.
